Malaysia, Skudai - Restoran Tong

My dad used to bring the whole family to this Bak Kut Teh shop in Skudai, Johor Bahru. It is located among some rundown row of shophouses, but that does not pull down the extremely wonderful taste of their food!

Wide parking space, and occasionally you may spot quite a number of Singapore cars :P

Seriously, I would like to stress again... Do not under-estimate what they can bring to your table!

It's a free seating concept, and you will be given a short list of menu upon seated. Basically, there is nothing to "look look see see". What they have are those common side dishes. And the main ones are definitely must go for!

First must order item: Bak Kut Teh (RM16.00 for 2 pax).

They have pig livers, mushrooms, and of course the pork ribs! It is almost indescribable!! The soup is so refreshing and sweet. I can basically drown my whole digestive system with the soup (non-refillable)!

Second must order dish: Eight Treasures (RM27.00).

It comes in one big pot, which had the staff confirming with us that this was what we wanted. Indeed, it comes in a big pot, which is the same size as the bak kut teh for 2 pax. But it is totally filled with mushrooms, braised pork, cabbage, beancurd, beancurd skin, fish maw, carrot, and bamboo shoot! It is so savory and all of it are well-cooked to the approprite softness.. Especially the fish maw!

Third must order dish: Kampong Steamed Chicken (RM22.00).

I love to stomach kampong chicken because they have less fats under the skin, and the meat seems to be more firm and bouncy. It should also be dipped with their green chili, which tastes like our usual chicken rice chili sauce, but less spicy yet more taste!

There do have steamed fish which is one of their signature dish too. But they have put up notices to inform patrons that if in a hurry, please refrain from ordering fish. Well, this can only tell us how fresh the fish will be, wouldn't it? If you want to order their chicken, especially, do go early because usually in the early afternoon, it would have been sold out already. That would be a waste :(

Just in case you are using a GPS to visit Restoran Tong, you may want to search for Jalan Hang Lekir 1, which is one of the entrance to Jalan Hang Lekir 10.
